Two-wheeler insurance provides financial protection against damages to your bike or scooter, third-party liabilities, and other risks like theft or natural disasters. In India, as per the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, it is mandatory to have at least third-party liability insurance. This ensures that any damage or injury caused to a third party in an accident involving your two-wheeler is covered.
There are two main types of two-wheeler insurance policies in India:

Third-Party Insurance: Covers legal liabilities for damages to a third party's property or injuries/death of a third party.
Comprehensive Insurance: Provides broader coverage, including third-party liability, damages to your vehicle, theft, and natural or man-made calamities. You can also add riders like zero depreciation or engine protection for enhanced coverage.
The premium for two-wheeler insurance depends on various factors, such as the type of policy, the vehicle's IDV (Insured Declared Value), engine capacity, and age of the vehicle. Comprehensive policies have higher premiums than third-party ones. A higher IDV, representing your vehicle's market value, increases the premium. Similarly, bikes with larger engine displacement (CC) attract higher costs. The vehicle's age impacts premium rates due to depreciation, with older vehicles generally having lower premiums. Additional riders like zero depreciation add to the cost, while a No Claim Bonus (NCB) can reduce it for claim-free policy terms.
To purchase or renew two-wheeler insurance, you typically need your vehicle's registration certificate (RC), the previous insurance policy details (for renewals), a valid driving license, and a Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate. You may also need ID proof, such as an Aadhaar card, PAN card, or passport. However, many insurers now offer paperless policies, where digital copies or policy numbers suffice, making the process more convenient.
